The Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine
founded Cleveland's oldest private hospital at its present location at
East 22nd Street and Central Avenue in 1865. St. Vincent Charity was the
site of many of Greater Cleveland's healthcare "firsts,"
including the first free outpatient clinic, the first School of Nursing
and the first hospital-based treatment program for alcoholics, Rosary
Hall.
St. Vincent Charity Hospital may be best known for its Heart Center
that has been recognized for excellence for 50 years. The roots of the
current open-heart surgery program began in the 1950s when surgeons from
St. Vincent Charity and Saint Luke's Hospitals collaborated to develop a
heart-lung machine to artificially oxygenate and circulate blood. In 1956,
the first successful open heart surgery in the Midwest was performed at
St. Vincent Charity Hospital using the pioneering technology. St. Vincent
Charity's Heart Center has sustained and expanded its reputation for
quality care over the years.
Today, St. Vincent Charity is a 480-bed acute care facility offering a
broad range of services for inpatients and outpatients.
St. Vincent Charity Hospital also sponsors the Solon Medical Campus -
SVCH, a 24-hour a day, seven day a week, Emergency Department featuring
23-hour observation beds, lab and x-ray, mammography and a full complement
of primary care and specialty care physicians.
Saint Luke's Medical Center, 11311
Shaker Blvd., Cleveland, Ohio:
Saint Luke's Medical Center was founded in 1894 as Cleveland General
Hospital in a converted mansion on Woodland Avenue where the city's public
health nurses were trained for service. Upon affiliation with the United
Methodist Church in 1906, its name was changed to Saint Luke's Hospital
and it moved to its present location on Shaker Boulevard in 1927.
For
more than 100 years, Saint Luke's maintained a proud legacy of quality
care with a full menu of healthcare services to its community. In 1998,
Saint Luke's staff, doctors and Board members joined their counterparts at
St. Vincent Charity Hospital in a year-long project to study how the
community uses the two East Side hospitals. In June, 1999, Saint Luke's
Medical Center and St. Vincent Charity Hospital launched a broad
realignment of clinical services at the two facilities.
Today, Saint Luke's Medical Center continues to provide vital health
services to the community it serves with 24-hour Emergency Services and
outpatient clinics for primary care/internal medicine, specialty care,
ear/nose/throat and pediatrics.
St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Saint Luke's Medical Center and St.
John West Shore Hospital in Westlake are part of a 50/50 tax-exempt
corporation formed between the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health
System (CSA Health System) and University
Hospitals Health System (UHHS) in June, 1999. Each hospital remains a
provider of quality Catholic healthcare. Ohio

Organization, and Professional Medical Equipment are wholly owned
subsidiaries of the Cleveland joint venture, which is called UHHS/CSAHS-Cuyahoga,
