
EMERGENCY SERVICES ROTATION OBJECTIVES
To increase the resident’s knowledge of the role of the emergency service in the hospital and it’s relationship to the dental service.
To allow the residents to gain the ability to quickly evaluate the medical status of a patient in an emergency situation and to plan and implement an organized approach to lifesaving treatment.
To give the resident practical experience in:
Residents clinical experience is provided in our state of the art dental facility. Residents participate in three off-service rotations which are completed in one month blocks. The rotations consist of Anesthesia, Internal Medicine and Emergency Room rotations.
INTERNAL MEDICINE ROTATION OBJECTIVES
To provide the resident with practical experience in the medical management of acute and chronically ill hospital patients.
To expand the resident’s knowledge of common illnesses that may alter dental therapy, ie. Diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, liver and kidney disorders and other organic illnesses.
To gain experience in physical evaluation with special emphasis on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.In general, to experience the functioning and protocol of a modern medical ward.
To become knowledgeable in obtaining consultation when indicated.
ANESTHESIOLOGY ROTATION OBJECTIVES
To introduce the resident to a modern hospital anesthesia service and its relation to the surgical discipline and to learn operating room procedures and protocol.
To obtain knowledge of:
Cardio-pulmonary physiology on a clinical level.
The pharmacology of various adjunctive drugs and their use with the different types of anesthetic agents.
To become knowledgeable of:
Evaluating patients at anesthetic risks
Indication and contra-indication for various anesthetic techniques and agents.
The selection of pre-anesthetic medications.
To gain practical experience in:
The principles, anatomy and techniques of intubation and airway maintenance.
The technical aspect of intravenous administration of fluids and medication.
The pre, during and post anesthesia management of surgical fluids and medication.
The management of emergencies and complications during operative procedures.
To permit the dental resident to acquire the knowledge of the proper selection and administration of emergency drugs
To let the resident gain experience in seeking consultations with the various medical disciplines to provide proper treatment for the emergency patient
To provide the resident with an opportunity to function in a highly stressful situation
